TRAMA: Calvin e Millie, due ventenni senza meta, non avevano intenzione di sparire dalla faccia della terra, ma quando si imbatterono in una villa abbandonata durante un'escursione nelle Adirondack, fu proprio quello che fecero. Crogiolandosi nella luce autunnale e persi tra le pile di tascabili, decisero di trascorrere l'inverno nella loro fortezza ritrovata. La primavera portò orde di animali selvatici, sia dentro che fuori, ma nessuna traccia di altri umani (a parte quello che cresceva nella pancia di Millie). Sarebbero passati altri quattro anni prima che la famiglia in crescita fosse costretta ad abbandonare la loro casa presunta, ma non hanno intenzione di andarsene senza combattere.
