SYNOPSIS: Calvin et Millie, deux jeunes gens sans but précis, n'avaient pas l'intention de disparaître de la surface de la Terre, mais lorsqu'ils sont tombés sur un manoir abandonné lors d'une randonnée dans les Adirondacks, c'est exactement ce qu'ils ont fait. Se prélassant dans la lumière d'automne et se perdant parmi les piles de livres de poche, ils ont décidé de passer l'hiver dans leur forteresse trouvée. Le printemps a apporté des hordes d'animaux sauvages, à l'intérieur comme à l'extérieur, mais aucun signe d'autres humains (à part celui qui grandissait dans le ventre de Millie). Il faudra encore quatre ans avant que la famille naissante ne soit forcée de quitter leur maison d'adoption, mais ils ne comptent pas partir sans se battre.
