SYNOPSISThe early exploration writing of Philip Sava bent the limits of post-modern fiction, revealing fantastical worlds that fooled many into believing they were, in fact, real. Sava’s kaleidoscopic collections, of which Memoirs of a Trespasser is the undeniable centerpiece, drew upon true experiences from his exotic travels but were infused with a hallucinatory inventiveness that set his work apart from others in the genre.

Though Sava had associates all over the world, he spent most of his time living in solitude on a ranch in southern Madagascar. When interrogated by the press on his cloistered lifestyle he notoriously answered, “Who needs love when there is still cognac in the glass?”

The scent turns warmer and woodier on my skin after an hour, and that myrrh note keeps it from being just another sweet vanilla. I’ve been spritzing it on before bed and catching whiffs of the guaiacwood that make me feel like I’m back on a dusty train platform somewhere far from home.

The Madagascar vanilla comes through warm and woody, not at all sweet like most vanillas I’ve tried. I wore it on a weekend road trip and then spritzed it at home days later—the memory association really works, it’s like carrying a little piece of the journey with you.

I dabbed this on before a long flight and the Madagascar vanilla softened to something almost like woodsmoke on my skin by the time I landed. It’s the kind of scent that makes you want to keep your wrist near your nose, and it lingers on a scarf for days after you’re home.
